Learning Objective
-Document their work using appropriate conventions (MLA)
-Control sentence-level error (grammar, punctuation, and spelling).
Framing Statement:
Sentence-level errors and correct MLA citation formatting has been something I have worked hard to improve this semester. I had never done MLA citation by hand until this class, and now I only do these citation by hand. I understand how and when it is appropriate to use different formats of citations, as seen in my Big Data paper. In the second paragraph of this project, not only do I quote my source, but I also paraphrase it as well, and these are followed by the appropriate citations. In my fifth paragraph, I again use a combination of paraphrase and direct quotes from my sources and cite them correctly based on my use of them in the paper. My reference page includes the full MLA citation I produced by hand for each of my sources. Again, now that I understand how to use MLA in-text and reference citations, I am more comfortable than ever that I can reference a source and give it the proper acknowledgment.
In regards to my sentence-level errors, I feel I have improved immensely this semester. One of my problem areas was commas usage, and because of our class work on grammar, I now understand the main aspects of comma usage and grammar in general. One strategy that has helped me with making local revisions to my writing, especially my Big Data paper, was to print out a copy of my work and go through it with a red pen. Reading aloud and writing on my work allowed me to see where my sentence-level errors and grammatical errors were and to make the proper corrections. My ability to identify and correct sentence-level and grammatical errors in my writing is directly correlated to my hard work at applying what we learned this semester to my own writing.
