Learning Objective
Be able to integrate their ideas with those of others using summary, paraphrase, quotation, analysis, and synthesis of relevant sources.
Framing Statement:
My ability to integrate sources and utilize them to enhance my arguments is an aspect of my writing that has grown a great deal this semester. In my Big Data paper, my use of sources to support my claims strengthens my argument and really allows me to drive home my points. My Cornell study source helps me to make the point of finding and utilizing the best exercise strategies for you. I am able to reference their study and explain how their results preach exactly the same argument I am making. One technique me learned this semester to integrate sources was the “lasagna” technique. The fifth paragraph of my Big Data paper incorporates this technique. I first quote Cukier then explain with meta-commentary what he is saying and how it relates to my argument. Then I reference Wernicke and add his ideas to my argument. I follow this by using a “they say, they say, I say” format to make my claim that parts of their arguments are right and I believe that a combination of their claims is best. I can honestly say this is not something I would have ever learned or been able to do without the lessons of this semester. Our work with “They Say, I Say” has allowed me to incorporate strategies about making my own claims while using others claims to support my ideas in the most cohesive and powerful way possible. I now feel I can integrate sources into my writing and utilize them effectively to enhance my own claims.
